City Hall Construction

Mission Viejo Committee for Integrity in Government

On March 7, 2000, 73% of those voting chose option #3, to build a 47,000+ square foot city hall near the city library. Those voters were generally unaware that our current city hall is only 26,000 square feet, based on a sampling of those who had voted. When asked if that would have made a difference in their vote, most said they would have preferred a ‘NO’ option. This is supported by a 53% ‘NO’ preference on the city manager’s own survey.

Since the vote, the scope and cost of the new City Hall has changed dramatically, without consulting the citizens again. What was promised to cost $10 to $12 million has now been completed for a cost in excess of $20 million dollars, The building will hold fewer employess than originally stated in the ballot materials.
