Fire Maps

The action of the council majority (Ury, Kelley, Leckness and Reardon) regarding fire maps impacts approximately half of the city’s homes. If some residents aren’t objecting, it is for two main reasons – first, they don’t know about it. Second, the spin leading to the action has resulted in confusion on why any action was taken. Two weeks ago, Councilwoman Cathy Schlicht’s letter to the council was published on this blog, outlining her concerns ( http://www.missionviejoca.org/html/article123.html ). She cast the only vote against rezoning a large portion of the city as a high-risk fire area.

Below is an alphabetical list of streets included in Special Fire Protection Areas. The category name might be a more palatable phrase than Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zones. However, the two phrases are interchangeable and appear as “Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zones/Special Fire Protection Areas” in Fire Authority documents. Because the city’s standards exceed the state’s regarding fire prevention, residents are right to question the council majority’s decision.

Blog readers have asked for a list of streets, and the following one appears to have some omissions and typographical errors, but residents can get the idea of the extent of what the council did.

Three Dog Night

Old guys rule – on stage, plus those in the audience feeling like they’re 21 again. Three Dog Night’s concert at Lake Mission Viejo on Saturday showed that the 1970s rockers are a little grayer and wider, but they still have it.

A middle-aged audience member commented, “I was seven years old when I first heard them sing ‘Joy to the World.’ I didn’t know anything about the band, but I loved frogs. They’ve been my favorite band ever since.”

The same musicians are still together from the original group, including singers Cory Wells, Danny Hutton, Jimmy Greenspoon and Michael Allsup. They pleased the crowd by playing their Top 40 hits, including “One Man Band,” “One,” “Celebrate,” and “An Old Fashioned Love Song,” plus a few new ones. The L.A.-based band is still touring, selling out concerts and making people happy.

The next concert on the lake will be on Sat., Aug. 4, 7:00 p.m., with Hunter Hayes.

The Buzz

One of Mission Viejo’s assets often goes unnoticed: the performing arts program at Saddleback College. The college presents outstanding musicals and concerts that rival shows at the OC Performing Arts Center. Additionally, Saddleback offers affordable tickets, easy access and free parking. The theater department recently advertised its lineup for the coming year, featuring “Rent,” “Servant of Two Masters” and a Big Band Swing concert. Tea Party Patriot Heather Bryden called attention to an effort to undermine the Brown Act, “Open government at heart of budget cut.” From the article, “California's 59-year-old Ralph M. Brown Act is meant to ensure open and accessible government. These days, it also shows how convoluted the state can be. A key feature of the act - that local elected bodies and commissions must post their meeting agendas in advance - was suspended as part of the new state budget, a bookkeeping move that could save the state $96 million in 2012-13.” Continue reading: http://www.sfgate.com/default/article/Open-government-at-heart-of-budget-cut-3707501.php

Paul Rand says, “The Supreme Court case to overturn Obamacare was always going to be a 50/50 coin flip. … But the number to worry about now is four. That’s the number of seats needed to change into conservative hands so I can stride down to the Senate floor and cast a vote for a victorious repeal of Obamacare. Republicans sit at 47 seats, and in order to repeal Obamacare, we must shove aside the roadblocks of President Obama and Majority Leader Harry Reid.

In addition to Ted Cruz in Texas, RANDPAC endorsed:

  • Representative Connie Mack in Florida. Rep. Mack has been a strong voice to audit the fed, rein in government and slash spending. He is seeking the Republican nomination in the August 14th primary to square off against Obama Administration mouth piece Bill Nelson for a seat conservatives must wrench out of the hands of Democrats.
  • Former Marc Neumann in Wisconsin. Former Representative Neumann has a history of standing up to the establishment in BOTH parties and now faces three Republicans, including former Governor Tommy Thompson who championed the individual mandate in the Republican primary August 14th.
The winner will compete against one of the most radical members of Congress, Democrat Tammy Baldwin for Wisconsin’s open Senate seat, which was held by the Democrats and is a prime pick up opportunity.
  • State Representative Kurt Bills in Minnesota. Kurt’s an economics teacher who got fed up with a government that spit on individual liberty and fiscal responsibility and stood up and said “no more!” While he won the support of party activists at the state convention, he still faces an August 14th primary for the right to face incumbent liberal Democrat Amy Klobuchar in the general.

“All four of these candidates are rock solid conservatives who are 100% committed to standing with senators like Jim DeMint, Mike Lee and myself to form a majority to repeal Obamacare.”
